Franchise revivals could be in the cards

While the new Tony Hawk Ride title recently released by Activision with the new board controller has not yet exactly been setting sales records, our sources tell us that Activision is not giving up on the potential of the accessory. Sources tell us that, in fact, Activision already has an additional title in development that will use the board controller.

While our sources seem be sure that the title is none other than a revival of the Kelly Slater Pro Surfing franchise, it seems that Activision might also be considering some other franchise revivals that could make use of the board controller, as well.

According to our sources, consideration is also being given to a revival of the Shaun Palmer Snowboarding franchise as well as the Shaun Murray Wakeboarding franchise. According to those in the know, it is possible that that the stars of the Surfing, Snowboarding, and Wakeboarding titles might change the revival of the board sports from the extreme sports segment that Activision dubbed “O2.”

Last time around, the “O2” extreme sports line from Activision (which was led by the Tony Hawk franchise) was a tough sell that was not nearly as successful as Activision had hoped. This time around, however, Activision does see potential because of the introduction of the board controller. Our sources tell us that a surfing title is already in the developmental planning stages, and if successful, other titles will follow.

Still, based on the rather lukewarm reception of Tony Hawk Ride, it is difficult to say if Activision will continue to pour money into this revival of their extreme sports product line. We have to believe that it will all boil down to sales and how well these titles could translate to the use of the board controller and what new things they can offer. Still, with the amount of money that was already invested in the development of the board controller, we do think it will be hard for Activision to just walk away without seeing if they can build some sales momentum going forward.
