1st week sales could total as much as $500 million

The day that many have been waiting for has finally arrived. Developer Infinity Ward and publisher Activision have finally reached launch day for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. In what will Activision is suggesting could be the largest video game launch in history, some analysts are already estimating that the first week of sales could total as much as $500 million alone.

If the pre-orders are any indication of what we can expect, retailer GameStop has said that COD MW2 has beaten all previous pre-order records. GameStop will have all locations open for the midnight launch of the game and many locations are having parties and tournaments to celebrate the launch. GameStop employees that we spoke with expect turnout to be heavy.

Despite some of the recent negative press regarding the PC version of the game, neither Activision nor Infinity Ward seem too worried about the impact it will have on actual sales. The majority of the sales of the title will come for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game. While the PC COD community is perhaps the most vocal of COD players, their sales will only make up a small percentage of the number of actual copies sold across the platforms.
