Free of charge

Nintendo has announced that Wii consoles affected [read broken.sub.ed.] by the firmware 4.2 will be repaired free of charge, both in the UK and the US.

Apparently, the company is "aware of a very small number of reported problems" after the 4.2 update, and the symptoms are mostly appearing with the consoles that have been modified. Nevertheless, a "very small number of people" reported problems, despite the fact that their systems are just as they bought them.

The company advises users with non-modified consoles who experience problems after downloading Wii System Menu 4.2 to contact customer service. If the system is indeed unmodified and the update is what made it break, the company will fix it free of charge.
