Guitar Hero 5 freebie shows up faster than expected

So, are you one of the ones who took advantage of the free Guitar Hero: Van Halen with the purchase of Guitar Hero 5? You might want to check your mail box, as we have word that the free copies of the Guitar Hero: Van Halen are starting to show up in mail boxes way ahead of the official retail release on December 22nd.

When it does arrive, some of you might be a bit disappointed in what you actually get. The game arrives as a “Promotional Only” disc that is in a cardboard slip sleeve. Yes, that’s right: no box, no manual, just the cardboard slip sleeve and the disc. The slip sleeve itself as well as the disc is clearly labeled that the game is for promotional use only and it is not for re-sale.

From what our sources tell us, so far there is no evidence of any way to export the Van Halen tracks into Guitar Hero 5. It is unknown whether once it hits actual retail on the 22nd if some patch will be sent down to allow the export of tracks. We think this might be an effort to prevent resale of the promotional version of the disc.

Basically, from what see, the game itself looks very much like the Guitar Hero Metallica that has been re-skinned with new Van Halen graphics and tracks to create this version of the game. Perhaps we should not have expected anything more, and it is what it is. After all, free is free; and if the cardboard sleeve really gets to you, then we are sure that after the 22nd someone will scan the actual case insert, you can print it out yourself and find a green case to house your Guitar Hero: Van Halen disc.
