Review score a bit higher this time, however

Electronic Arts has been taking some time to reflect on the launch of Madden NFL 10, and according to reports, sales are down despite an aggressive marketing campaign. The bright spot, according to the leaked memo, is that the review scores for this year’s edition have been strong.

EA CEO John Riccitiello, however, claims that the situation this time around is discouraging. Sales of the title on the PlayStation 2 and the Wii have both been hits with sharp drop offs compared to last year. Still, this year the Xbox 360 edition leads the pack with an estimated 928,000 copies sold; but that is still less than the million that EA was able to move last year.

All totaled, the 2010 edition has only sold 1.9 million copies across all platforms, which is down from the 2.2 million that EA was able to sell last time around. While the game is still selling according to our sources, it just isn’t moving that fast this year. No one actually knows why this is; but our sources point to the sluggish economy as the source of the problem.

While some can push this off on the economy, we think the other problem is that Madden did have a few other titles that were grabbing gamers’ attention and limited money, such as Batman: Arkham Asylum, which has sold an estimated 593,000 copies since release. These other titles are making purchasing decisions difficult, but we do expect that with the NFL season starting last night that Madden sales will trend upward a bit in the coming weeks as people get back into the football season.
