PSPgo could help sales of the UMD-based PSP

It seems that GameStop is embracing the arrival of the PSPgo with a lot more excitement than many imagined for a device that is download-driven. Sources tell us that GameStop seems to believe there will be a lot of positive opportunities to drive revenue from the PSPgo.

Our sources tell us that GameStop will be driving PSP owners that are considering the PSPgo to trade in not only their PSP, but their UMD games to GameStop toward the purchase of a PSPgo. The by-product will be a much stronger availability of both used PSP units as well as more used PSP titles, which according to our sources, has been a problem. The numbers of available used PSP UMD titles have never been what anyone would have liked, because users buying those titles tend to keep them.

In addition, our sources tell us that GameStop will also be driving the sale of points cards as well. GameStop is expected to try to excite users into trading in UMD titles toward points cards which can be used to download content for the PSPgo. This is one way to get titles on to your PSPgo if they are offered for download and you already own the UMD.

While many users seem to be excited about the design, the download only options for the system seem to be more of an issue for those who own PSP units with many titles on UMD. Many are questioning the move to a system without any UMD support that is download-only based since there is currently not a method to get this content over to the new system. It seems that this sticking point might have more of an impact on sales than some imagined, but Sony still sees the unit targeted at early adopters; and the PSP will still be available for the rest of us.
