3 title Platinum Hits bundle deal

Capcom will be trying something new to churn more dollars out of older titles with a novel approach that is primarily targeted at new buyers of the Xbox 360, or those that don’t happen to own these specific titles. The new deal is a bundling or “Triple Pack,” as they are calling it, of Platinum Hits titles for a bargain basement price.

Capcom will be launching the first Triple Pack on September 8th. It will include DeadRising, Lost Planet Colonies Edition, and Devil May Cry 4. While the box art on the front of the package might be a little confusing, it does get the message across that there are three titles in the package for the low price of $39.99. The titles will be packaged in one case, which will save the publisher on packaging costs, and we expect the original manuals will be included; but don’t be surprised if this is successful that they make changes to the manual to reduce printing costs in future releases.

What might be most interesting about this Platinum Hits Triple Pack release is the actual pricing strategy that is really nothing more than a buy two, get one free, if you assume that most Platinum Hits titles actually go for $19.99 per. Based on the going rate, if you were to buy the three titles used, you are likely to pay between $40 and $50 for them; but there are, of course, better deals to be had as these titles are older.

While we think it could be a good starter selection of games for someone just getting their first Xbox 360 or someone who didn’t happen to own any of the three titles, the likely buyer will be those parents bundling it with an Xbox 360 this holiday season. We do expect that many publishers will be watching to see if it is possible to wring out additional dollars using this strategy.
