Market for ?M? rated titles for Wii exists

Despite poor sales Sega will continue development

Sega still thinks that a market does exist for Mature or “M” rated titles on the Nintendo Wii. Despite the poor sales of House of the Dead: Overkill and MadWorld, the company will press on with the development of mature titles for the Wii platform.

According to reports, House of the Dead: Overkill only sold 45,000 copies on the Wii, and the innovative MadWorld was only able to move 66,000 copies. Neither of them did very well by normal industry standards considering the large installed user base that the Wii has.

Of course, it is stunning with sales numbers like these that Sega would want to press on with the development of mature rated titles for the Wii platform. While some believe that the truth is that the M rated titles just don’t do well because of the general family oriented make up of the Wii target audience, others believe that those players who like Mature rated titles are buying them for other platforms instead of the Wii.

Some analysts believe that the Wii sales numbers continue to be inflated by what is now being called “Second Console Syndrome.”  Some believe that the Wii suffers from the fact that a great number of serious game players buy the Wii as a second console and then just don’t use the Wii for serious gaming; instead, they then buy mature rated titles for their Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. Nintendo recently addressed this issue by suggesting that they needed to have titles that attracted the more serious game players.
