Largest entertainment launch of all time planned

Activision, as well as many industry analysts, is predicting that Modern Warfare 2 from developer Infinity Ward will be the largest selling game for all of 2009. Confidence is now so high that Activision is going to pull out all of the stops in promoting the launch of Modern Warfare 2 with one of the largest, if not the largest, entertainment launch of all time; or so we hear.

From what our sources are telling us, while the entire promotion campaign is still in the final planning stages, the company plans to start an aggressive kick off for the pre-marketing of the title in August to encourage gamers to pre-order the title in advance. From what we hear, many rewards and incentives will be offered to get gamers to plunk down their deposit for Modern Warfare 2 in advance.

While the first Modern Warfare title sold over 13 million units on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC platforms, it does not seem, at least at the moment that it is in the top ten of the titles that gamers are looking forward to this holiday season. Some analysts believe that the title will sell based on the name alone, and while the push that Activision is planning might make some remember the Halo 3 launch, it could be tempting fate to just assume that gamers will flock to buy Modern Warfare 2.

Some people are already saying that the decision to spin the Modern Warfare series off from the Call of Duty fold might be a risky move by Activision, as many players do not realize that this new branding move has taken place; which could lead to some buyer confusion that might only be overcome by a massive marketing campaign on a scale that has not been seen in the videogame industry before. It might be the only way to ensure that players know that the title is the sequel to COD: Modern Warfare and that it is developed by the same studio as the original.

Modern Warfare 2 will not have smooth sailing, as it will have to compete for dollars against titles like Halo 3: ODST and Left 4 Dead 2, both of which are expected to do well. Currently, reports suggest that Halo 3: ODST seems to be heading the list of the games this fall that gamers are looking forward to purchasing.
