Criterion developing unannounced online NFS title

Some new news that about the future upcoming long term titles in development from Electronic Arts developers DICE and Criterion has made its way to us.

From what we are hearing, despite the fact that DICE is already working on several Battlefield titles on multiple platforms including Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 1943, DICE has already completed the planning process and has started work on Battlefield 3. While nothing is known about Battlefield 3 or when it will make its appearance, we at least no know that it is in fact in production.

Criterion, on the other hand, has been tapped to work on a new Need for Speed title that will be an online affair. EA feels that Criterion is uniquely qualified to build this new Need for Speed online title based on their previous work on the Burnout series. Like Battlefield 3, we know next to nothing about this title other than it is already in production. We don’t have a clue what this might mean for the Burnout franchise.

With no specifics or release dates, it is hard to even get an idea of what both studios might be cooking up. What we do know is that the decision to put both of these titles into production does go along with Electronic Arts trying to stick with what works. Our best guess is that it is unlikely that you will see these titles show up in 2010, but the possibility of a 2011 release with an expected announcement during E3 in 2010 is likely.
