Positive reviews and good buzz don’t equal sales

Tongues continue to wag about the disappointing first week sales for the Wii exclusive title, Excitebots, which according to reports only sold 13,000 units last week in the U.S. The numbers are very disappointing for the successor to Excite Truck.

Despite all of the positive reviews and strong buzz that Excitebots had out of the gate, it seems that at least for the moment only hardcore fans of the Excite franchise have been attracted to the title. The Exctitebots title is a fast-paced, motion controlled racing title that offers robot vehicles, which gives the title a new twist not found in Excite Truck or the original Excite Bike that appeared for the NES.

Some analysts have suggested that Excitebots might just be a victim of the timing of its release, and that after E3 sales might pick up once Wii owners know what to expect for the holiday season. Still, other analysts suggest that the issue could have more to do with the audience on the Wii and some titles just don’t generate the kind of sales that publishers expect.

Recently released “M” rated titles, Madworld and House of the Dead: Overkill, both did not have good numbers right out of the gate either, but both were expected to do well. The lack of sales of some titles has left publishers scratching their heads trying to figure out exactly what Wii gamers are willing to buy for their consoles. With the recent move to develop more titles for the Wii, the recent slow sales of titles expected to do well has more than a few publishers and developers worried about potential sales for titles that they currently have in development.
