Worried about iPhone success as game platform

It seems that the new PSP platform is more likely than our sources had originally indicated, as Sony internally is pretty shaken over Apple’s success with moving the iPhone as a new gaming platform.

Sony, of course, does not want to see the iPhone taking away potential sales from the PSP product, but whether or not convergence of the handheld gaming and cell phone platform is the eventual future is the question Sony is pondering.

While Sony does have a partnership to produce cell phones and could develop a device similar to the iPhone using technology from the PSP, our source claims that Sony has rejected this idea and does believe that a handheld gaming device such as a new PSP with more advanced features can still be viable in this the marketplace.

Sony needs to get busy and work on the revival of the PSP platform, as developers have moved on from the platform seeking larger markets in other places and have devoted their limited resources to these, and they have included the iPhone. Due to this, Sony has not seen as many titles released for the PSP as they would have liked; this has led to fewer sales for the PSP platform, not to mention a lot of unhappiness among PSP owners.

Sony needs to move quickly if they are going to attempt to breathe life back into the PSP platform, but with over 30 million iPhones sold and a good number of those in the hands of people that play games, the days of the dedicated handheld gaming device might be closer than anyone suspected.
