Launch considered very successful

Nintendo has put up some good numbers with their recent launch of the DSi in North America and Europe. The DSi was able to bag 300,000 units sold in North America during the first two days of launch, as well as another 300,000 units sold in Europe during the first two days that the DSi was available.

Based on the number sold during the launch in North America and Europe, Nintendo has announced its intention to keep the price of both the DSi, as well as the Wii, the same for the time being. Nintendo believes that because they continue to be the low price leader in both product categories, consumers will still choose them over their competitors.

Nintendo also has talked about plans to move the DS and DSi into new directions, such as using it for applications in schools for teachers, area maps, specific building maps such as a mall, and the ability to get coupons using the devices. Of course, these new applications and uses for the DS and DSi will come to Japan first before the company tries to introduce it anyplace else.

While Microsoft continues to think of itself as the low priced leader with the Xbox 360 Arcade, it is interesting for Nintendo to attempt to refer to itself as the low priced leader. While it is clear that they have the price lead in the handheld market, rumors continue that Sony maybe preparing a new PSP refresh in an attempt to revive the handheld platform with developers and break Nintendo’s stranglehold in the handheld market space.
