Sequel could be multi-platform this time around

While it has remained one of the worst kept secrets around for some time now, EA made it official today that Mass Effect 2 is in development by BioWare for an early first quarter 2010 release. What might be bigger news is that this time around the title might be released on multiple platforms, including the PlayStation 3. The first Mass Effect was only released for the Xbox 360 and PC.

The news that Mass Effect 2 will be coming to the PS3 is not really that big of a surprise, since the title uses the Unreal Engine 3 which is available for all three platforms.

What is strange is that although EA Chief John Riccitiello did say multiple platforms, EA’s PR department is not confirming Mass Effect on the PS3, but only for the Xbox 360 and PC, which are the same platforms as the original game.

So, at this point we are not sure if Mass Effect 2 is being slated for the PlayStation 3 or not; but our sources are saying that EA wants it for the PlayStation 3 this time around as well as the Xbox 360 and PC.  There might be a contractual reason why this might not be the case and the company is working on it, but perhaps they are not yet ready to announce anything.
