Only in Japan, for the time being

In a move that is a bit unexpected by Nintendo who has always insisted that the console was about the gaming, the company will expand its Wii offerings to video services as well as food delivery. For the time being, this expansion into non-gaming related services will be limited to Japan only to start with.

Nintendo will be working with Dentsu to launch the new video service for the Wii. Dentsu will work with other companies to develop video content that is specifically directed at the Wii audience. No word yet on the kind of video content you can expect to get on your Wii.

Nintendo will also be launching the “Food Delivery Channel” that will offer a variety of food that can be delivered to those in Japan once the channel launches later this year. The ordering will be handled by Demae-can.com and it will offer a variety of foods to order. Of course, if you can’t decide on what you want, you will also be able to spin the “food roulette wheel” and a meal can be chosen for you at random for delivery.

At least for the time being, both the video and food delivery will be trialed in Japan, but if it proves successful, Wii owners outside of Japan might see Nintendo expand these offerings into other markets, as well. However, for the time being we expect Nintendo to study the response to these offerings to see how likely it would be for it to do well in other markets.
