Double Fine chooses EA Partners program

While the news for EA has not been good over the past couple of weeks, one bright spot has to be the announcement that Tim Schafer’s Brutal Legend from Double Fine Productions is going to EA through their EA Partners program.

Brutal Legend was a victim of the Activision/Blizzard merger and the future of the title has been in doubt for the past couple of weeks, as no news on a new publisher had been announced. The game has been in development for some time on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms.

Brutal Legend comes from the mind of Tim Schafer who has received much acclaim over the years for such titles as Psychonauts, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, and Full Throttle. Schafer’s talent for being involved with unique and captivating products has never been in question, but some of his more recent titles have not met with as much commercial success as expected and many analysts believe that this has had more to do with the choice in publishers and marketing than the quality of the work.

The third-person rock n’ roll adventure game stars Jack Black and is expected to make Brutal Legend at least an interesting vision for a new Schafer property that is sure to push gaming in new directions. The choice to go with EA Partners is likely a good decision for Double Fine, as EA does have the marketing muscle to make sure that the game gets the attention that it deserves. Our sources are still telling us that the game is on track to be released in fall of 2009.
