Nintendo reverses stance on Wii Speak?

Replacement download codes are now possible

Maybe Nintendo has reversed its position on not issuing replacement codes for the Wii Speak mic after all. Sources were telling us that the included code to activate the Wii Speak would not be replaced if lost or in the event a Wii Speak was purchased used.

Now it seems that Nintendo is going the other direction, claiming that initial reports were not accurate and while the vouchers are for a one-time use, those that have misplaced their code, have had hardware fixed, or just otherwise lack a code can call customer service to have a new code issued to them.

Initial reports and sources were claiming that the use of the “Download Ticket Number” or what we have been calling the code were an effort by Nintendo to try to curb the sale of used Wii Speak equipment. Much of the speculation was fueled by the wording of the accompanying documentation that the code would not be replaced and that additional codes would not be sold on the Wii Shopping Channel.

The Wii Speak Channel will be launching in December and will not require the user to load a game before using the voice chat feature. This is anticipated to be a big draw, as well as the Animal Crossing: City Folk, which also uses the Wii Speak mic.

The addition of the Wii Speak Channel will address one of the major shortcomings that many users point out about the Wii console as it has lacked the chat communication that has been offered by both Microsoft and Sony on their console systems for some time.

We will have to see if this news actually pans out and we doubt if we will know for sure until we attempt to call in and request a code ourselves.
