Buyer beware

We’ve
come across some interesting info that will surely be a must-read for those anxious to purchase Google’s Nexus One, although the info isn’t much positive this time around. Those who decide to go for Nexus One are advised to carefully read the small print but buyers are dealing with two companies here, which means that there’s two small prints to heed.

Users who purchase Nexus One better use it and like it, because if they don’t, the two companies have prepared a couple of “treats”. If a user cancels his purchase plan anywhere between 14 days and four months of usage (when the phone is actually paid off), they are subject to some fees. Such a move is of course understandable, as canceling the plan where you purchased and expensive phone and paid peanuts for it is not without ramifications.

Unfortunately there’s a catch here – Google’s documents says that "the Equipment Recovery Fee is imposed by Google and not your chosen carrier and is in addition to any early termination fees that may be charged by your chosen carrier in connection with termination of your wireless plan prior to fulfillment of your chosen carrier's service agreement term." So, dealing with two companies in this case might prove to be an expensive decision.

This means that if you cancel your plan anywhere from 14 days to 4 months from the purchase, you will splash out some nice dough – and do it twice, once for each company. In such a scenario, T-Mobile’s current policy says that the company will happily help itself to $550 of your money. Couple that with the $179 you’ll pay for the phone itself and you’ll curse your luck forever for not reading the small print.

Google’s small print says that users who cancel their purchase within first 14 days will be only charged with the $45 cost of restocking refurbishing the phone. Europeans are exempt from this rules and will not be charged with these fees and will even be refunded for the shipping fees.

So, buyer beware. Twice.
