Turns them into overpriced paperweights

Apple
seems to have gotten it very wrong with its latest iPhone OS 3.1 update, and even its loyal consumers are hating the new update.

In previous iterations of the OS, Apple managed to massively improve a number of features in the phone, adding more functionality and getting rid of numerous bugs and oversights. However, the most recent update seems to be causing massive problems for the majority of users and it's rather hard to believe Apple got it so wrong this time around, considering users rushed to update to all previous updates, as they were excellent.

Complaints are ranging from various difficulties with legally unlocked phones, wireless problems, GPS issues, loss of signal and poor battery life. In some instances, the phones simply got bricked by the new OS. The wide range of problems is rather disturbing, as it seems it won't be easy to pinpoint the issue, especially for consumers who aren't tech savvy.

To make matters worse, Apple doesn't provide a downgrade option which would allow users to revert to OS 3.0, at least until Apple works out the bugs in 3.1. However, there are some online guides showing how to revert to 3.0 without iTunes, and you can find out more about the workaround at Apple Insider.
