iPhone 3G S, the new iPhone is out

Fails to really impress

Before I get dozen email from iPhone fanboys I'd better mention that I had an iPhone before. The original iPhone launched two years ago was the best surfing platform but it lacked 3G, Video, MMS, Copy Paste and Voice control.

Two years on, Apple is launching 3.0 software that has support for 3G, Video, auto focus camera, MMS, Copy Paste, Voice and even some silly things such as a digital compass.

The most disappointing detail is that the phone looks physically the same. Come on Apple, people like to show off their phones and now you took away the ability to parade around with their new phones. No one will know that you have a new iPhone 3G S unless you show them your digital compass or video, which you obviously won't do. This is deeply disappointing and they should have at least made some minor design tweaks, or at least offered new colours just to keep the users happy.

A digital compass might help you in some foreign streets and an auto focus camera is ok, but 3 megapixels is something that would impress us three + years ago and putting anything less than a 5 megapixel camera in your top phone is laughable. Let’s not forget that you don’t have any kind of flash, so you can forget taking pictures in the dark.

Voice control and MMS would have surprised us 5 years ago, but not in middle of 2009. Let’s not forget you can now forward your MMS or SMS, something that normal phones had some 10 years ago. Copy paste from your messages or webpages including pictures is impressive. Being able to edit video that you take is also nice.

The price for US guys will be $199 for 16GB version and two year contract or $299 for 32GB with the same contract. Probably the most important thing about the new iPhone is that it should be “up to 2X faster” and it should be faster with loading applications, rendering webpages and even playing some 3D games.

Overall Apple fanboys will be camping to get one and in my case going from iPhone 1G to iPhone 3G –S might make sense, but in the meantime I gave up on iPhone despite the fact that it is the best pocket fitting platforms for opening webpages.

Talking to your phone is nice, and asking what song is that is a nice feature but as every other voice technology it depends deeply of your pronunciation of words. We still have to be impressed with any voice technologies as they tend to work some 80 percent of the time, which is not sufficient for any serious use.

The good thing is that our own David S. was right with almost every single detail, and we were not really surprised with the announcement. You have many more details about the new iPhone 3G S here.
