Nokia will send Mosh into pit

Popular content posting site to end

Nokia’s networking website, Mosh, opened in 2007 and allowed users to post any type of content they wanted there. It has been very popular since then and virtually uncensored, and is accessible from a smartphone, feature phone or from a PC at http://mosh.nokia.com/

Nokia has announced that it will close the site, probably not long after it launches its online Ovi media and application store later this spring. Mosh says it has tallied 137 million downloads since its launch. Nokia was one of the few providers who moved aggressively into the content arena and also offers music store services, a gaming service, N-gage, and soon its new online Ovi Store, competing directly against Apple’s App store.

While the upcoming Ovi Store is the official reason that Mosh is closing down, Nokia will not lose the many lessons it has learned from operating Mosh, including operating an open store and how to elicit and implement user recommendations. Nokia will also now charge fees for some of the services it used to offer for free.

The free posting of any content on the site will also disappear, as all content on the new Ovi Store will be screened. Mosh was notorious for all types of pornography since the site did not monitor any content that was posted.

Nokia will also merge its Download! Software store with Mosh and WidSets, its widget service, in the May timeframe.
