Intel to replace 945-series with P/G31-series

But not for Atom

As we told you here, Intel is discontinuing its driver development for the 945-series of chipsets and the replacement chipset will primarily be the G31 chipset, which still uses the old ICH7, with the P31 taking over as the solution for non-IGP solutions.

However, this is not the case for the deskop Atom processors, as they'll still have to make do with the 945GC chipset, which seems like an odd plan by Intel, unless the company has a lot of stock of this rather old chipset and wants to get rid of them before moving up the Atom processor to a newer chipset.

Intel is also looking at killing off the 946 and 965-series later this year, as it's just too many different SKUs for the company to have, especially with the P/G4x series launching in less than two months' time. It will be interesting to see what happens toward the end of the year, as with Intel moving onto a completley new platform, it will most likely consolidate a lot more of its chipsets when we get there.
