Competes with TSMC

We had a chance to chat with industry sources that are very knowledgeable about Globalfoundries, and we have learned some goals and plans for the future. Globalfoundries is the company that spun-off from AMD and will do chip manufacturing and compete with TSMC for state of the art manufacturing customers.

Currently, Globalfoundries is two weeks old and is touring and trying to talk to many potential customers as it wants to assure its potential customers that it will treat them as equals. Their key and first customer however is still going to be AMD.

The Dresden foundry, FAB will be ready with 32nm process in 2010 and this means that they should be ready with both SOI and bulk process in this year. Intel will start 32nm production in Q4 2009 but the real volume for Intel is 2010, and this is actually good news for AMD, as the company will potentially shorten the gap between its 32nm and Intel’s 32nm process introduction.

Customers like Nvidia, VIA or anyone you can imagine, including Freescale and any other chip manufacturer are potential customers, but it will probably be a while.
