Pricey, to say the least

With the introduction of mobile quad-core processors, Intel has moved the mobile market in line with the desktop market once again, if only for a short while before the Core i7 launches in a couple of months time.

The new mobile processors, the Q9100 and QX9300 are only for those with very deep pockets, as Intel has decided to charge a lot for the extra two cores.

Starting with the Q9100 which comes with 12MB of L2 cache, a clock speed of 2.26GHz and a 1,066MHz, you're looking at a steep US$851 in quantities of 1,000 processors.

As you've most likely expected by now, the QX9300 is even more expensive, and the only difference between it and the Q9100 is the higher clock speed of 2.53GHz and the fact that it's not multiplier locked as with all Extreme Edition CPUs from Intel. The price, you ask? A whopping US$1,038, that's even more expensive than a desktop QX9650.

Both processors are expected to be available from sometime next month. Expect them to turn up in desktop replacement notebooks from the usual suspects.
