Up to 16MB cache for quad-cores

We have
already reported that Intel plans to launch two six -ore Xeons that will fit to Caneland multi-CPU platforms. Caneland platform can cope with up to four CPUs and if you plug four Dunningtons you will end up with an impressive 24 cores, and all cores are Core 2-based.

Even if you use four quad-cores you will end up with a nice number of 16 cores that should be enough for some nasty tasks.

The new Xeon are supposed to launch in Q3 and the faster of the multi-socket quad-cores will work at 2.4GHz. It is branded as Xeon E7440, has 16MB of cache and uses FSB 1066MHz. It will cost $1,924 at launch.

If you have followed the Xeon market, you can easily see that E7440 spec looks the same as E7340. but has 16MB cache while the E7340 has only 8MB.

The other Xeon branded as E7420 will also launch in Q3 with a $1,143 launch price and this new Quad-core multi-socket capable Xeon CPU has 8MB cache. E7420 is clocked at a modest 2.13GHz and it fits the same socket microFCPGA6. It is there to replace E7320, the quad-core Xeon, with the same speed and spec but with only 4MB cache.

The new happy family launches in Q3.
