Hybrid flash drives dying a slow death

No one wants them

Hybrid drives are failing to attract the sort of attention that manufacturers expected.

According to News.com, many expected hybrid hard drives with a bit of flash memory in it that would serve as a data cache as the next new thing.

Hybrid drives cut down power consumption, increase battery life, and reduced boot-up times. However few have been sold as initial versions haven't delivered the performance consumers expected. Analysts say that the situation might be corrected if drive makers put in more flash.

Currently there is only about 256MB of memory in a hybrid drive and if this was upped to 4GB or so, the flash could hold a lot more storage, which in turn would reduce power consumption and help boot-up time.

The problem with this is that it will raise the price.
