Computex 08: MXM modules aplenty

PowerColor is expanding its business into MXM graphics modules; and considering that AMD’s Puma platform is likely to make ATI mobile graphics solutions even more popular than in the past, this might not be a bad move.

We were shown three different MXM modules consisting of a Mobility Radeon HD 3450, 3650 and 3870. As you can see, the 3450 and 3650 look quite similar, with the only difference being the GPU.

The 3870, on the other hand, requires a larger MXM card partly because it needs a more advanced power regulation, but also because the card houses more graphics memory. It’s not hard to see how you can fit a pair of these into a rather small external box and use XGP to connect this to your notebook for some SLI action.

PowerColor is also entering the motherboard market, although don’t expect to be able to buy these motherboards, as they’re only for system integrators, but you might find one inside your PC in the near future.

The cards below should be the Mobility Radeon 3650, 3870 and 3450.
