Toshiba's triple layer gambit

The DVD Forum has approved Toshiba's proposal for a new triple layer disc structure.

Current HD DVDs come in single and dual layer flavors, with 15 and 30GB capacity respectively.

The new standard increases capacity per layer from 15 to 17GB to offer a total of 51GBs of storage, one gigabyte more than a dual layer Blu Ray disc.

It is still unclear whether the new triple layer discs are compatible with currently available HD devices.
