Next gen consoles to get tessellation

Written by Fuad Abazovic

Looks like 2012
Although they are still quite some time away, it looks like the consoles of tomorrow might get some serious tessellation support. This is not so surprising knowing that the console refresh comes in 2012, at least according to our well informed industry sources.

Knowing what manufacturing process should be available in 2012 you can expect 22nm chips in the best case scenario, chips that will get much more power efficient and way faster than what we have today. If you take in the account that the current high end core such as GF100 and soon to launch GF110 and Cayman have some 3+ billion transistors you can easily guess that the 22nm parts can theoretically pack almost four times as much. You will probably agree that twelve billion transistors sounds quite ridiculous.

Tessellation looks good, even on GF100-based products which were six months behind schedule and even mainstream parts such as Geforce GTX 460 can deliver good tessellation support. The new Barts-based Radeon HD 6850 and HD6870 boards can pull off some nice tessellation too. The cards of tomorrow will most likely do it many times faster and PC games could benefit a lot from tessellation on consoles, simply as developers care and make more money off console games.

If they develop native tessellation on consoles it will definitely find its way to PC too, unfortunately only at some point in 2012.

Lol did you just put a Nvidia banner in a future consoles ? NOPE.

Microsoft are using AMD, they simply could not be happier with the GPU in the 360 (being better than the GPU in the PS3 whilst also being cheaper) and speculation is that Sony will head towards PowerVR for their graphics... if not i doubt they will use Nvidia again, after all the bottleneck in the PS3 is the graphics card.

barts is also mainstream and actually has better tesselation than 460 sorry. I somehow doubt 22nm will be ready by 2012. Will probly be sampling 22nm only. Although maybe AMD can somehow finish by end of 2012 if GloFo is succesful. I heard Intel has actually started letting others use its cutting-edge fabs. So Maybe if Intel does more of this too then yea 22nm.

I'm pretty sure metro 2033 does some tesselation "natively" already as does that dirt 2 game, tho very little. Tho once consoles get dx11 then yes finlly game development will move away from dx9 and all the multi-platform releases can have everyone enjoying dx11. As usual the consoles will not use a high tessellation level so even a mainstream barts would do. They only do 2x AA as it is for their eye candy.

Next gen Consoles + nV = No Go.

the R500 in the Xbox360 has AND use allready tesseletion , for the Landscape generator to save bandwith - that is
but it has only 1 ramcontroller shared 4 the gpu and cpu ; would like to c improvement in that direction ; btw the r500 has only 96 shader - so no matter what you replace it with it would end up faster

Next gen consoles + NV = fanboy dream.

Yes, we see how AMD is good with tessellation only. :D

What happened to real-time Ray Tracing?

I heard aswell that Intel is still secretly ontrack with their internal roadmaps for Larrabee and that the only way to get into the graphics card arena fast would be to do the graphics for a console.

They will easily have 22nm in 2012 too!

I hope they remember to equip them with decent amount of memory, both RAM and video RAM, so our PC games will not be screwed for another 7 years.

fuad, stop being a green fanboy and try to write objective news for a change,
you, as well as half the world, allready knows that nvidia lost the last generation and the current one, microsoft skipped to ati and sony is moving away from green as well..

stop making it look like nvidia is more holy than the pope.. their not.. their crap
