I'm not impressed by this card either, though it has some really good USP's. It's around the same price point as nVidia's GeForce 8800 GTS 640 MB and gets very close to the 8800 GTX. Furthermore, for gamers who also like HD video content, this is card is the better choice since it not only decodes H.264, but also AVC. nVidia's 8800 series does only H.264 and lacks full HDMI support. Only some 8600 models are available with HDMI, but that's not even a match to the HD 2900 XT.

All in all I think this is still a good card for the money. It may not be the fastest, but it is the next best thing.

Personal note: at the moment I own a 8600 GT (because I don't need extreme gaming power), but if AMD's Radeon HD 2600XT/Pro has the same advantages, I will replace my GeForce.

What is going on here, I always adored ATI because the image quality was so much more superior it wasn't even funny, and now they gone and lost a product cycle and still can't come back with something to stay competitive? I'm salivating at what this card can do for Folding@Home users but I'm not about to wait for quad core processors a month from now and pick a graphics card that isn't 'the best' I can get.

Then again does losing a few fps here and there in benchmarks really mean anything to most gamers? For ATI's sake I hope these high end versions sell like hotcakes as well.
