19  Hardware / Motherboard / GA-X58A-OC on: March 07, 2011, 09:38:21 PM

Press release [Monday 7 March 2011]

Gigabyte Technology has announced the launch of the world's first motherboard designed from the
ground up for extreme overclockers, the GA-X58A-OC. Its overclocking specific performance design
defines a whole new category of enthusiast focused motherboards that introduces never-seen-before
tweaking and insulating features.

Based on the Intel X58 chipset (Tylersburg) and supporting LGA 1366 socket CPUs such as Intel's new
top of the range Core i7 990X Extreme Edition CPU, the X58A-OC takes advantage of all the
performance benefits that the X58 platform has to offer including triple channel DDR3 memory
support, 6 core 12 thread CPU support, and enough PCIe Gen 2.0 bandwidth to support 4-way
CrossFireX and 3-way SLI for the best graphics performance in the world.

Gigabyte has listened closely to the overclocking community to make sure the X58A-OC has all of the
overclocking features enthusiasts have been asking for, without some of the features that are
unnecessary while overclocking, or can negatively impact performance - similar to a stripped down
sports car where the aircon, radio, passenger seats, etc have been removed to reduce weight.
Layout was a critical aspect of the design, not only in choice of components used, but also spacing of
the components so that insulation of the board is as easy as possible, while still maintaining the most
efficient data pathways between the various components. Gigabyte is also introducing five new main
overclocking features on the X58A-OC that help to push the performance envelope of the X58A-OC
even further including OC-VRM, OC-Touch, OC-PEG, OC-Cool and OC-DualBIOS.

Note on GeForce GTX 590 Overcurrent Protection and Overclocking

    Question

Note on GeForce GTX 590 Overcurrent Protection and Overclocking

In the web release driver of GeForce GTX 590, we have added some important enhancements to our overcurrent protection for overclocking. We recommend anyone doing overclocking or running stress apps to always use the latest web driver to get the fullest protection for your hardware. Please note that overcurrent protection does not eliminate the risks of overclocking, and hardware damage is possible, particularly when overvoltaging. We recommend anyone using the GTX 590 board with the reference aircooler stick with the default voltage while overclocking, and avoid working around overcurrent protection mechanisms for stress applications. This will help maintain GTX 590's great combination of acoustics, performance, and reliability. NVIDIA has worked with several watercooling companies to develop waterblocks for GTX 590, and these solutions will help provide additional margin for overclocking, but even in this case we recommend enthusiasts stay within 12.5-25mV of the default voltage in order to minimize risk.

These are guidelines only - any overclocking/overvoltaging can void your manufacturer's product warranty.

Editor's Note
The RTOS that “drives” an embedded system is like the driver of an automobile who must do a number of critical tasks simultaneously relating to vehicle operation and safety, while at the same time deal with a variety of lower priority activities inside the car that compete for attention – the number of which seems to increase with every new model.

27  Software / Programs / NVIDIA ForceWare 266.58 Performance Analysis on: January 27, 2011, 01:36:26 AM

Author: Shane Baxtor

NVIDIA release a heap of drivers. It seems there's one coming out every week lately.
Unlike AMD, NVIDIAs betas are really pushed throughout the enthusiast community.
If we did the same kind of thing with the NVIDIA ForceWare drivers as we do with AMD
and its Catalyst drivers, I would be testing ForceWare drivers 24 / 7.

The ForceWare 266.58 driver set is more important, because unlike a lot of other drivers this is a WHQL one;
which for people who prefer to only upgrade when WHQL ones make their way to the market, it could well be time for an upgrade.

30  Hardware / Others / LibreOffice Productivity Suite 3.3.3 on: January 26, 2011, 02:35:57 AM
If LibreOffice appears at all familiar, it should come as no surprise that the suite has roots in OpenOffice. In fact it is a community lead branch of the same office suite that has been developed by The Document Foundation. You may well wonder why there is a need for different branches of the same office suite - the main reason is that it enables broader changes and additions to be made to the suite

As things stand at the moment, LibreOffice Productivity Suite is not very different to OpenOffice. The main focus of the early releases of the suite are tidying up and optimising existing code before switching to adding new features and options.

Existing users of OpenOffice will feel immediately at home, as all of the familiar components of the suite can be found here in LibreOffice. The suite comprises a word processor, spreadsheet, drawing tool, database and numerous other components. Files can be saved in the suite's own native format, or in formats that are compatible with the likes of Microsoft Office.

As an Office suite is almost essential for most computer users, coupled with the fact that commercial suites tend to be somewhat expensive, there is nothing to be lost in trying out a free alternative. LibreOffice, just like its stable mate OpenOffice, is a very competent tool which could easily cater for your home office or business needs.

Verdict:
LibreOffice proves that the fact that software is free does not mean that it is poor quality - this is a recommended alternative to Microsoft Office.
