1  Hardware / Processors - CPU / Re: Q9450's SHip march 17th on: March 04, 2008, 07:57:28 AM
What is the meaning of "shipping" ?
10 CPUs per country or something like 1000?

eliot.
I didn't understand your question.

I do understand I guess Cheesy he means the quantity of processors "shipped" to a country - if it's just a bunch you can't call it shipping - it's a drop in the ocean.

@geizhals it's listed for ~270€ but it's not available ... I think I 'll wait a few days after shipping (if that happens) and check availability - if it's better than expected I think the price will drop a few Euro. Compared to the exchange rates these days it should cost about 230€ ... and I don't think the dollar will suddenly be strong again (it hasn't been for 5 or 6 years now)

Edit: some shops @geizhals say the baby can be delivered at 15th ... hope that's true !!
2  Hardware / Graphics Cards / Re: Graphic card prices these days. on: March 04, 2008, 07:45:32 AM
in general - these are good days to buy new graphic cards ... I am very glad that ATI is back and can compete with Nvidia - good performances for a very low price - and i don't see any reason why this shouldn't continue the next month.  Grin

4  Welcome to Fudzilla Forum / General Discussion / Re: UK prices are a joke! on: March 03, 2008, 06:47:23 PM
I should add, what is the average salary in the UK and Europe?

don't get me wrong - the Anglo-Saxons are part of Europe Cheesy

Eliots point of view ("more warranty - more expensive") is quite true I guess. That's sometimes also a reason why we get products later here in Euroland - more regulations for the companies concerning health and quality standards before they can release a new product - and that's a matter of cost also, and we have to pay for it.

yeahhh i know - I tried to find Linux-concerning market figures several times for presentations. But it's really hard - Apache and Firefox are the only open source projects you can get user statistics for due to evident reasons. But nobody can confirm the amount of Linux installations out there. But .... there is  http://counter.li.org/

ahhh - "Beweislastumkehr" after 6 month ... or in english "shifting of the burden of proof" - mhhh - reffering to dict.leo.org there is no single english word for it ...

But back to topic - when do you guys think the intel Q9450 will be available - I am waiting for about 6 weeks now ... Sad
7  Hardware / Hard Disk Drive / Re: Samsung F1 - 2 x HD502IJ, 2 x HE502IJ, or 1 x HD753LJ? I Need A New RAID Co on: March 03, 2008, 11:03:16 AM
it WAS very mixed.  Some say it's amazing (silent, fast, cheap) others say it crashed after a few month or even a few days and it's crap. I wrote "WAS" because a few minutes ago I found this information:

I read the opinions a few weaks ago and a lot of people complained about the 'samsung f1 "m.c." error' when testing the drive with hutil (defect sectors). But now (about 1 month later) I saw for the first time, that Samsung clarified, that this is a hutil-bug and that the drive is perfectly ok.

http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=393679&sid=aaef7b5c8fea898d55040b4afb94b122#393679

So this was my main reason not buying this baby ... I think i will order these days Cheesy
And 3 years of guarantee makes it more worth buying it - in Germany you can get on for 99€, here in Austria it's still 107€

don't get me wrong - I do not have a problem with ubuntu (i have several installations and did some ubuntu training allready). I am just wondering WHY everybody talks about it all the time - yeahh you might be right ... the server is free, there is a LTS every 2 years and Marky Boy has enough money.
But i disbelieve that Ubuntu is market leader Smiley - to be honest, I think in Europe still SuSE is Nr.1 (but I don't know it for sure) - in the US it might be Fedora? Referring to distrowatch PCLinuxOS (a KDE Distro) is Nr.1., Ubuntu is Nr.2 ... anyway, it's ok as long people DO use Linux and talk about it Cheesy

If you understand german you can read some user opinions about the product here: http://geizhals.at/?sr=260888,-1
geizhals.at is fudzillas "most favorite price search machine" in Europe and mainly german.

I was also thinking about buying this drive, but I read a lot of bad things about it (crashes after a few days, weeks, month) and I don't know if ti can take them serious.

That is of course untrue for EU... we have at least six month warranty (but the meaning "warranty" has to sides of a coin in the EU), but if you overclock the warranty is out of the window anyway...

The manufacture xode doesn't say anything important, more important is the sSpec code.

best,

Eliot

I thought we have 12 month of "Gewährleistung"? ... (sorry for non-germans & non-EU citizens  - there is no english word for it, it's a kind of "guarantee by law" that can't be lowered by companies - but additionally we have the "normal" guarantee in the EU as you might know it)

and the even better thing is ... compared to the Euro, the Dollar has an currency rate like the russian roubel or something 10 years ago ... good times to buy hardware (and travel the states for a few pennys)  Grin

Edit: ... and thanks for the summary !
12  Hardware / Graphics Cards / Re: GeForce 9800 GX2, 9800 GTX & 3870 X2 Compared on: March 03, 2008, 08:06:10 AM
mhhh - for me - i anticipated a better performance ... this is good for AMD i guess ?
13  Software / Linux and others Unixoids / Re: More Linux banter on: March 03, 2008, 08:03:45 AM
yes you are right - every hype concerning Linux is a good one in general, what I meant - I think it's a little bit sad, that everybody is talking about Ubuntu only ... there are other equal distros out there. But as you said - for Linux and the community in general it is a good cause.
14  Software / Linux and others Unixoids / Re: More Linux banter on: March 02, 2008, 09:30:45 AM
I think it's interesting that Ubunty is hyped that way .... when I say "hyped" I mean that everybody trying to switch to Linux or is writing an article about doing so, it is definitly Ubuntu going to be used.
I don't say that Ubuntu is "bad" (in contrast - Ubuntu caused a lot of good things in the Linux world) -  and I have installed it for a dozen times myself allready,  but there are other (more easy) distros out there.
15  Software / Linux and others Unixoids / Re: Which distro? on: March 02, 2008, 09:24:31 AM
for newbies i thing SuSE and Mandriva should be one of the best ... (k)ubuntu is also nice but due to lack of some administration tools you definitly have to learn a lot (?) of things concerning the shell, drivers, ... before you can adjust the system to your needs. It may also depend on the desktop environment you use (-> KDE or GNOME ... it's like 'modern coltish' vs. 'minimal easy to use')
