300 series branding reserved for DirectX 10.1

One Fermi
secret was recently unveiled. The official name is going to be Geforce GTX 480 and GTX 470. Naturally the bigger number goes for the faster and more expensive card while the runner up card gets the Geforce 470 name.

It turns out the 300 series names were reserved for Nvidia’s “new” DirectX 10.1 chips and this is why 380 and 370 names were not planned for these cards. These names will remain in the notebook market as well as entry level desktop where Nvidia sells most of its DirectX 10.1 chips.

The launch date is still March, but we don’t know the exact date. Partners might be able to show the cards at Cebit, at least in closed boxes guarded by Nvidia. At least the name is now officially out of the box and we learned the name hasn’t changed since late Q4 2009.
