But they lost Calpella to Nvidia

ATI has increased its market share in notebook graphics. We don’t know the exact number yet but the company was evidently winning more designs in Montevina refresh designs than Nvidia.

A few weeks ago we counted ATI vs. Nvidia discrete notebooks in Best Buy and some other US retail stores and we ended up with close to two thirds of all notebooks having ATI, and only one third going to Nvidia. This is the number of systems with discrete notebook graphics card and didn’t include IGPs.

This was enough to help ATI to regain its lost market share but again, the fight is far from over, as Nvidia won most of Calpella designs, something you can read here.

In this part of the market Nvidia and ATI are definitely playing tick – tock strategy as every cycle is predominantly won by the other player.
