Would like to sell it off and focus on memory business
First the news about VisionTek and now PNY. According to some vague info that we received from our people in the know, PNY is said to be actively shopping their graphics business unit and looking for a way to quickly exit the video card business.
Like we said earlier about VisionTek, PNY is also struggling to move video card inventory as the business has been flat, to put it mildly, due to the current economic climate. The company is said to be quietly looking at its options.
PNY is one of the most high profile of video card partners for Nvidia and one of the few that sells Nvidia’s Quattro line of professional level ISV certified cards. If PNY was not able to unload the video card business unit, it could leave quite a void for Nvidia who has relied on PNY’s ability to sell the high end professional level cards. It is unknown what Nvidia’s plan would be to replace PNY as a partner should the company depart the video card business without being able to sell it off to someone else.
As with the VisionTek story, we do not have official confirmation on what PNY might be doing, and we don’t expect to hear anything until the company makes a final decision and all options have been reviewed. The loss of PNY with its return to focus on its core memory business would be a blow for Nvidia, but we will have to see how this one plays out.
