Who can get it faster, yield better

Sources close to Globalfoundries have informed us that TSMC won’t be the only company having the 28nm half node in early 2010.

We’ve already wrote here that Globalfoundries will be ready to take 32nm orders in Q4 2009 and 28nm half node, especially interesting for graphic people should be following shortly after. You can read about it here.

The 28nm process will mainly be interesting to Nvidia and ATI as they need the fastest transistors and chips that the can get, under the desired TDP but we have a feeling that 28nm graphics from ATI will come exclusively from Globalfoundries.

If they want to play it safe ATI will prepare one chip for Globalfoundries and one for TSMC and we are quite sure that TSMC will fight hard for Nvidia’s attention. If Nvidia goes to Globalfoundries for 28nm graphics and this is very possible especially if Globalfoundries can have better yields and transition, not to mention the price comnetition, TSMC will be in trouble.

Late 2009 and early 2010 will be a time for an interesting manufacturing fight.
