toymaker Apple might make a lot of headlines out of its Application Store but it is not really making the outfit any serious money.

According to AppleInsider, most people think the App Store a cash cow for Apple.  However its function is less of a money maker and more of a marketing trick for the iPhone.

Apple appears to have earned $20 million and $45 million from the store for its first billion downloads which is about three percent of Apple's revenue. Not to be sneezed at but hardly worth the effort.

No one really believed  Apple when it said that the App Store isn't meant as a profit generator and is instead a means of attracting customers to the iPhone and iPod touch.
