MediaSmart gets new hardware

HP is upgrading its MediaSmart server lineup so that it can handle more powerful hardware.

It will feature software support for Macs and improved over-the-Net streaming of users' media files. The current batch of HP's MediaSmart servers run Windows Home Server and cannot do backups of Macs which run the Time Machine backup software.

Currently, the Mac will only back-up to its own overpriced Time Capsule products, but with the outfit making inroads into the home market, it seems HP wants to integrate the gear a bit better.

The HP MediaSmart Server ex485 with 750 Gbytes of hard disk storage is $599, while the HP MediaSmart Server ex487 with 1.5 terabytes of storage inside it will be priced at $749.
