Well there aren't many PS3 games which run at 60 fps. Most run at 30 fps, which is acceptable in most games. Also, console games use hardware specific optimizations which can do miracles for the framerate.

The most powerfull gpu in the world, the hd7970 is not capable to max out every game in 1080p @60fps.You would need 4 hd7970 in crossfire to run a game @4k resolution.

4K blue ray play back maybe. 4K gaming NO F-ing way. It currently take's a PC with quad GPU's to play game in 4K with good FPS. And with consoles having trouble playing games in 720P. I expect next gen consoles to play games in 1080p.

Maybe for upscaling videos to 4k as there new bluray player, but playing in 4k resolutions no way! What is the nitch market millionaires? Lol The 4k tvs are way to $$$, consoles are pc replacement due to affordability! majority of customers will be happy with 1080p resolution @ 60fps with or without 3D. (Current 3d is @ 720p @ 30fps or 1080p @ 24fps) I expect next gen pc monitors and gpus to support 4k 8k before consoles as usual. It took tvs about 5 years to get to less than $1000 for 1080p from high end vendors like samsung, I'm expecting the same for 4k in five years to be affordable.

Yes. It is too farfetched. On crack. Snorting nitrous. Imagine what it would cost to put a GPU capable of driving three 2560 displays for games with Avatar+ graphics into a console. (think HD7990 crossfired) Now imagine adding that cost to a console for the .001% of owners that have a 4K or 8K display. Now imagine how farfetched that would be.

Looking at the television sets which are being shown at the CES, I don't consider 4K2K going anywhere yet. First of all it has a totally wrong aspect ratio. Unless we are talking about Quad Full High Definition (QFHD) which is 3840x2160 and has a 16:9 aspect ratio. This year it's all about Smart TV's, IPS and/or OLED. Smart TV hardware usually can't handle anything above 1080p so we'll either have to wait until next year or even later.

The graphics hardware should not have much difficulties running at those resolutions. The current-generation AMD 7k series are usually tested on WQXGA resolution (2560x1600) in multiple monitor setups - often at resolutions as high as 7680x1600 and still getting acceptable framerates in the latest games. Don't forget that the PS4 hardware spec is probably not even finalized. I assume it will use a hybrid GPU using next-gen Graphics Core Next architecture with a few bits of architecture of the generation after the next-gen AMD iteration of Graphics Core Next. If Sony will licence AMD technology.

Heck, Sony touts its current PS3 as a HD console, and yet most games are under 720 or even lower. It might be a marketing gimmick to promote consistent 1080p gaming on its next Playstation incarnation.
