I bought a couple of 500GB HDD's in 2009 - they're both full now - but my plans encompass a better backup and archival regimen (to BD-ROMs) and to keep these hard drives going in service for as long as possible. Cheap hard drives until just a few months ago were tempting me to give up and just buy more, but now I can resist again! :P

Less competition is never good for anyone except the people at the top. Also my hard drives are all Seagate but after this non-sense of dropping all the warranties to a single year (even the five year warranties are dropped all the way to a single) I probably won't buy their drives until they completely reverse. Just a heads-up, it applies to drives coming out at the end of the year. WD also moderately reduced their warranties. Sucks because Hitachi is a bit behind (unless I'm wrong) so their drives tend to have more platters. Just a lose-lose situation to be needing hard drive capacity right now.
