Was thinking the same, how the hell are they being allowed to create a monopoly, fix prices and screw the consumer out of a decent warranty? Hopefully we are not going to get screwed for a decade before they intervene like they did with the RAM price fixing issue.

C:\ 128GB SSD XP, booting, applications and games. D:\ 320 GB RAID 1 Work and personal stuff. Z:\ 1.5TB RAID 1 bulk, anything that doesn't belong on a boot drive and takes up too much space. More than enough space for me and I don't have any interest in throwing out perfectly working drives. If a RAID breaks I'll replace it with new drives with five year warranty for D:\ though I won't mind a three year warranty for Z:\. A fool and their money are soon parted. When I buy I intend to get the most use out of what I own. Besides, every time I do an OS install with important files on the boot drive the installer refuses to install without formatting.

Not surprised Sagate is dropping their warranty as they have higher failure rates and just don't want to pay to replace them, but a drop from 5 to 1 year seams a bit much. My guess is that the recent floods caused a decline in quality, and with prices so low "before the floods" their profit margins aren't high enough to do 3-5 year warranties. I buy WD Black drives so it doesnt affect me, yet. NickThePrick - i have a 5, 4 and 2 year old WD drives in the pc i'm using now. some people don't recycle HDD like you

5 years is overkill anyway. Who still has a 5 year old drive? Even if it breaks, new ones cost next to nothing. If it helps them to get through this economy, why not...

Hope it's not bad news for reliabiliy. On the other hand, if one of my disks crashes after 2y, I'll buy a new, faster one with better capacity instead of going for warranty. I wish they would include in th warranty is offer you to get back the data you have on your dead disk.
