If it were only so, and I wouldn't call refined code "just a". As evolucion8 said, it is clear that Win 7 addressed a lot of the performance shortcomings that Vista had, Win 8 won't have to because there aren't any. The only thing they address will be touch input at which Win 7 isn't so good at. However, touch is only useful on the TV show Caste and on mobile devices (pones/tablets), Win 7 can't go there because of the large footprint. This is also something that will be address in Win 8, but still it won't concern most of the market, the money makers, i.e. server people & working people, home people tend more to pirate the OS so... and businesses won't even bother to upgrade for so little.

It would be very smart that AMD buy ARM license and start working on Tegra like chips for smartphones and tablets. Win 8 could change the game. Where was their brain when they sold Imageon to Qualcomm.

True but same can be said for Vista to Win 7 switch...Win7 is just a refined code with a facelift. Same path seems to be for Windows 8. Still Win7 is successful coz RAM prices went down which was basically the main bottleneck for Vista Also more people have Quad-Cores/HT-Enabled dual cores now as well so Win 7 looks much faster than Vista. Main selling point of Win8 will be ARM support I think Nvidia has an ace up their sleeve with Project Denver, time will tell. btw, Mr.Read how about AMD branded motherboards!? You have AMD branded memory which u bought back...Bring back AMD branded Motherboards!! These 3 tier mobo makers asus, gigabyte,m si are SHIT!

Except MS is not the one bringing in the big bux in the x86 space. Facebook, Twitter and other ultra-high usage clients of the x86 space would love to switch to a more less costly processing model, ARM is good exactly for that. Except it was stated that Windows 8 will bring nothing new to the desktop market. It's a touch/tablet oriented OS, all its features are targeted at that market and neither AMD nor intel have high stakes in tablets nor smart phones. Except there were tons of articles in the recent past where ARM was touted as the replacement in the server space, you did miss those dear Watson? /s Anyway, whatever keeps competition up is good for us, no point throwing mud just yet.

No shit Sherlock Read..ARM was a competitor to x86 the day Microsoft demonstrated Windows 8 based desktop PC's running on it. Playing the waiting game is risky though but I don't blame him due to AMD's limited resources/money. If ARM does indeed kickstart something Nvidia will reap the rewards first with Project Denver. Tough times ahead Mr.Read. Glad your listening to your consumer hope your reading stuff here too, how about selling FX-6100 for $100-120?

ARM is a competitor because clients shift operations to ARM hardware, thus shrinking x86 space. If they will continue to do so, Read said AMD will embrace ARM architecture and enter that apace as well. The part about intel not being a competitor isn't there. Read said that intel will stubbornly hold on to x86, and rightfully so, they are good at it even if IA64 failed miserably, and not go ARM even if the clients want it. I assume engaging in another architecture other than x86 and failing it again will be too much for intel.

So ARM cpu vendors are competitors despite AMD not producing any ARM chips, but Intel aren't competitors despite them being the other major producer of x86 with AMD ... ok :o
