the first p4 doubled the pipeline length of the then current CPU's. the last p4 added another 50% on top of that. bulldozers pipeline is 2 steps shorter then the first p4's and todays cpu's have longer pipelines. AMD added about 30% to the pipeline length. that's not even in the same league as the p4. AMD has 2 main problems. 1: 32nm at global foundies isn't mature. hence the lower then expected clock-speed and higher powerusege. and 2: intel's L3 is is EXTREMELY good. its almost as good as AMD's l2 on the bulldozer. but much larger.

Faildozzer, you're a tool. You seem to have a short memory, or maybe you're just simply not old enough to remember Pentium 4. Which is probably more likely. AMD's worst mistake is not learning from the mistakes that Intel made 10 years ago, and doing what they did to get back on track.

Considering that they are fabless, it's no wonder AMD struggles. Even with fabs they would struggle, and this is a problem intel doesn't face. AMD had to wait for the proper manufacturing tech to come, and when it came they did the old design on it, which eventually failed. Next year things will hopefully change, GF will get a new fab, new processes, and AMD might be able to make a proper design with isn't compromised from the start. That's on the tech side. On the business side, it's good to see Read doing something to cut losses, which if cut properly might help AMD move a bit forward in the near future, if not done properly more debt and poor performance. Also, I believe Read needs a more aggressive marketing team.

I would agree with the spirit of this, but my understanding is that the designs are completed 2 or 3 years (?)before they are executed, so it seems to me that in the short term, the only thing left for a COO to do is to work on cost and help the value for the dollar fight. The current crop of CPU's isn't "bad" it's just not everything people had hoped for. They aren't as good as Intel for gaming and, they don't do synthetics very well. What they need to be to compete, is cheaper. An FX8120 @ $199 goes against an i5 2400. Now that's a fight it can win.
