Before the price-hike you could get a 1TB drive on Newegg for about $55 and a 1.5TB drive for about $80 with 2TB drives just starting to dip down to the $100 point. Now a 1TB drive that used to cost $55 costs $140 if you don't want to opt for the only two drives with lower prices (109.99 and 129.99). 1.5TB drives now cost $140+ and 2TB drives now cost 149.99 for the cheapest model and 229.99 for the second cheapest model. My Corsair Nova 128 cost nearly $400 last summer and now you can get a SATA-II 128GB drive for about $190 or a SATA-III 120GB for 174.99. So that's a huge upset on prices. By next summer we'll probably see SSD drives drop to somewhere between $0.6~0.9 per gigabyte

Agreed. It's a question of principle. My own strategy, as an interim measure, will be to move the two 2 HDDs in my current system to my new build (January '12), which will only have a new 128 GB Crucial M4, until HDD prices return to earth.

SSDs aren't worth the money for a new system where you need space more then anything else. Unless you are using a Phenom II X4 or lesser CPU there also really isn't much to even upgrade to at the moment, waiting is likely in most consumers benefit. If I was going to build a new rig this month I likely would hold onto the cash till March now. By the time the prices normalize, Ivy Bridge will be on the scene. Though if you REALLY want to make a build the price increases are not as high on the retail side. looks like 20-50% instead. In some cases I'm seeing the same old pricing. So that is something to look into. At least for the next week or two, at some point they will rise sharply as well.

Or you could get an SSD now and a mechanical hard drive later for storage. PCs can amazingly accomodate more than one hard drive.

While many may indeed choose SSD drive instead of “price gouged” HDD, I’m putting my planned “umpteenth” pc build on hold indefinitely. So while retailers maybe raking in the cash from 100% increase in HDD drives over the past week, it’s my opinion, they will ultimately lose money and customers for other items. There will be a ripple effect from those like myself opting not to purchase at the time, because SSD storage volume is just too low for my needs. I “REFUSE” to buy a "price gouged” HDD and the natural result of that decision is that, I will not, be buying that CPU, Ram, OS, computer case, power supply, or graphics card either
