I've been looking at windows tablets, but only to be able to run ubuntu or dual boot ubuntu/win7. My stance on app store only access to applications for an OS is no thanks.

even 22nm is still in fabs, 14nm is long away. Yes, intel does great cpus but i doubt that they will approach 500mW TDP of modern ARMs anytime soon. On the other hand i doubt W8 will be any fast on ARM, i mean apps, not "awesom metro interface"

You can bet your balls that Intel are furiously working on a x86 chip (22nm oe 14nm Atom variant). Microsoft have consistantly been slow, stupid, foolish...but Intel have always had amazing business thinking....there is no possible way that at the end of 2011, Intell are not working on a Tablet x86 chip. Imagine a Tri-gate 14nm Atom with Win8. Goodbye crApple

if you do remember BUILD conference with W8 tablet prototypes, they were all running on 2nd generation i5 which, in its lowest TDP version, consumes at about 20 times more than Tegra2/A5. On the other hand, its much faster. So i see it like this, either you go an 1kg< 10' incher with i5, running all apps great and using active coling system and having a 4hr battery, or you will get a fanless ARM W8 one that eill run "some software" at painfuly low speeds (imagine .net apps on ARM if even i5 is not allways that fast with em) but with 8+ battery life.

I got a netbook - the Samsung NC10 - in late 2008 that runs WinXP (x86 obviously). If you added a touchscreen that rotated and converted to tablet mode, you'd be almost there. Battery life already >7 hours, needs better Intel on-board graphics though! It wouldn't be the thinnest thing around but I don't care too much about that if it's functional. And I can run my desktop PC's apps on it (which I would be able to).

. Love to see one. BUT................ Everytime Microsoft gets involved in a gadget, it is usually late to the punch, ineffective, and not very useful. Since purchasing my windows 7 phone, there are THOUSANDS of apps out there, very few for my phone. I know, they let the developers have the code AFTER the phone is released. But a year later, nothing, nada. Wish they can get their act together. .

x86 tablets aren't going to be ruled out. Also .net executables are architecture independant and therefore some apps will be able to run cross-platform as long as they are not dependant on any native libs (sadly not many apps but it still means that some can be used, others will in most cases only need a recompile so it's not a big deal in any case).

I don't find it shocking. And if you where asking about "A desktop version of windows that doesn't kill your battery and doesn't cost a little fortune" that 42% could be much much higher. Android is good, iOS maybe better, but I don't think that there are many people who want or have the time to learn more than one OS.
