Tablet computers use rare earth elements and possibly coltan in manufacture, and are effectively like blood diamonds in the modern world. It's terrible to have more than the absolute minimum required. Hopefully, researchers will work out how to recycle these rare earths in the future to allow resource recovery from obsoleted equipment.

I find it sad to have 3 or more tablets in home just to avoid WALKING to the NEXT room. As for cheap tablets there are dozens with prices from less than $100 up to $200. They are just simple Chinese "no name" tablets that can easily "do some basic web browsing". If you are really bored to just walk to the next room you can easily make your "vision in late 2010, early 2011" today a reality with those cheap tablets and "fulfill the digital home dream".
