You don't need to violate any patents in order to be taken to court and have to spend millions defense. Remembering back to the SCO vs Linux fiasco being funding by Microsoft...it was found no patents were violated, yet it still took years and millions in costs to determine that.

I am sure some aspects of Windows kernel API are patented and/or trademarked. As long as it remains 80% ready project of a schoolboy MS may ignore it. But if it starts getting real traction no doubt MS will come with thick wad of lawsuits. And without 100% API compatibility you can't expect third party applications to run correctly. Especially when it comes to drivers.

"80 per cent of real world usage" is ludicrously optimistic. I tested recently and its clearly in Alpha stage, if that. I like the idea very much, and support it, but Karatov was simply lying to the President. On another note: what effect would this have on the development on the OS? Would the Russian government attach strings to the money in the form of, say, forcing the developers to include backdoors?

NT? From their website: Most people think of 'NT' as 'WinNT 4', while in reality the term NT refers to the NT series, which ranges from version 3 over NT5 (2000, XP, 2003) to NT6 (Vista, 2008 and 7).
