Intel's tactic is to control the spec and implementation of the interconnect: AMD will need some time and likely no small amount of money to implement thunderbolt in it's chipsets. In the meantime, if TB catches on, Intel has a strong marketing card to play against AMD. Hmmm, Thunderbolt... TB. I hope it is not catching.

OK the latest USB spec or thunderbolt might just stress PCIe a little bit, but where are the CPUs or GPUs or RAID controllers that can pump that much data into the PCIe bus?? High end video cards at PCIe x8 are about 5% slower than on PCIe x16. You'd need a RAID array with north of 16 disks to flood PCIe. So... I think Intel is trying to direct our attention away from something more than Intel is trying to move the platform forward. What do you suppose Intel is trying to obscure?

damn babies. Intel wants to replace/add the PCIe 2.0 x1 slots with/to PCIe 2.0 x2 slots. that's all. its not like if boards came with x2 slots, intel and thunderbolt would be the only ones to benefit. we already use x16 video cards in x8 and X4 slots, and x1 soundcards and NICs in x4 slots. i don't see what you're crying about.

It will be some time until PCIe 3.0 will be adopted by the add-in board and bridge manufacturers for now PCIe 2.0 is still enough, except for SSD's and future graphics cards. Well, F x2... use x4 as standard and let the mainboard manufacturers wire them per specs or need. If the chips has 4 x1 or 2 x2 they would be able to pick one way or the other but the size of the port wouldn't change. Otherwise, 3 years later we'll get to see x2 being dropped as well out of the same reasons.
