AMD has raised the expectations of software developers recently with their 3 day presentation. It all looks very cool indeed, far better than programming CUDA. Lets hope they have something besides a laptop apu to program for real soon.

Southern Islands is new built from the ground up. Currently the Northern Islands GPU has elements of the SI design. So in reality it is new and should be quite powerful/fast.

No, it won't. The aforementioned article has a pretty clear conclusion "At no point has AMD specified when a GPU will appear using GCN [...] What we know for a fact is that Trinity – the 2012 Bulldozer APU – will not use GCN" S.I. is VLIW4 as it was meant to be from the start. N.I. was a filler on 40nm for S.I., S.I. should have been on one of the lower nodes canceled by TSMC. So right now AMD is correcting TSMC's f-up.

true but I just stated what they need to bring to compete. The 1st 28nm gpu will probably be a chip like the 4770 when AMD shrank its gpus to 40nm chips. HD 7770 chip? maybe

Over at 3dcenter they believe, that it is likely that they use GCN with these chips already, although they are not sure. Personally, I believe that AMD will again aim for a split launch with some chips sporting gcn while others relying on the older architecture.
