Pricing is a good carrot, and ARM devices are going to be even cheaper than that of even the AMD offering. When more ARM devices arrive intel will have to work harder to justify that lofty price premium they carry. Also you have to remember take into account that if you want decent graphic performance with an intel chip, you have to add an AMD or an nVidia discrete card so AMD isn't exactly out in the cold there either.

At the beginning it's a bit harder, ARM evidently has the upper hand but AMD and Intel will undoubtedly come up with competent chips. @loadwick, yes, binary encoding of storing data on planar models is pretty much exploited. All they can do now is focus on 3D storage and/or higher base encoding. We'll get there... eventually.

@gozzak Not sure 500GB flash memory as standard is only 2-3 years away. I would estimate the max spend on a HDD these days is $100 and we seem to be reaching the limits of what NAND chip size reduction can cope with as 25nm seems to be plagued with errors but even if we go smaller and solve these errors the price isn't going down that much. There is no real price difference between the 50nm and the 25nm drives. So to get to 500Gb at a sane price is a fair few years IMO.

My concern is not whether ARM can survive against Intel but whether AMD can with ARM now on the scene. Apart from the Athlon64 blip AMD only really seems to compete on low to medium performance machines and use pricing as their carrot. But if ARM move into laptops and basic desktops with their A15 chips then i fear this will not eat into Intel's market share but AMD's. If ARM can get Windows running nicely with some half decent graphics inbuild from the likes of nVidia and PowerVR then its AMD that will feel the pain not Intel. IMO anyway.

Neither Intel nor MS need to rush. The tablet/netbook fad is all about "consumption" devices and not "creation" devices. Tablets/Netbooks are not used to create, so there is no possibility of any company becoming a "standard" the way the PC did, because standards are only needed for creation of stuff. That means that at any time, a new player can come in an take over the market because there is no industry standard to replace (like with the PC). As long as the device does HTML, flash and can play music and video, the that`s all it needs. When Intel starts making 14nm Windows8 system on a chip that doesnt need a fan, and 500GB Flash memory is standard, then ARM and crApple are finnished. That`s only 2-3 years away

People seem to be taking my comments as pro Intel but i am just calling it as i see it. I would like nothing more than Bulldozer to wipe the floor with Sandy bridge and ARM to get their act together and release A15 at 28nm so they can compete on performance not just power but I just don't see it happening as Intel seems to coast along at just enough infront to not get too big but not get caught up in pricing wars. Mobile chips are different as i think this market took everyone by surprise how big and important it has become (most of all AMD!) but Intel will catch up, they have the money and power, whether its Moorestown or for my money the gen after that at 22nm/14nm but ARM need to push as hard as they can before Intel start their engines.

Intel will get respect if it shows the same to it's opponents too. It's unfair to ask something you didnt give in the first place. @loadwick Yes mate, i agree with you that intel is ahead in terms of technology, but that is why we people want competition in the first place. If intel continues, it may well be the single company that will be running in the near future and we might end up with a monopoly and they might start dictating terms in the market. And who knows, today intel brought 3d transistors, tomorrow amd might bring up something as well? Lets hope for the better good that these companies will get competitive.

The problem for AMD and more so ARM is that their chips have to not just match Intel but have to be a lot better than theirs just to win. Yes marketing, brand power and economies of scale play their part but what i am talking about is DIE PROCESS. Intel is almost on 22nm and ARM start still on 40nm, they will go to 28nm soon but they will never catch up to Intel in terms of size and technique. The new 3D transistor is a prime example of this. So both ARM and AMD need to be better than Intel just to run along side them. AMD are struggling at 32nm while Intel are running at 5GHz and moving to 22nm. And for ARM its worse as the smaller you get the lower the power draw.

lets hope amd + arm does an offer you can't refuse to intel so there will be a lot more competition in the chip market.and amd will probably make bouth arm and 32bit architecture cpus
